Selected Project Summaries

Selected completed projects are discussed briefly below:

New Residence

Palo Alto, California

Romig Engineers is the geotechnical engineer for this high-end Palo Alto residence.  The residence will include about 3,500 square feet of above ground living space and a two level basement that extends about 20 feet below grade for a basketball court.  The deep basement required creative temporary excavation support techniques that included fixed head moment frame pier shoring systems combined with more conventional stitch pier shoring and cut slope construction.

Defender Lodge

Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Palo Alto, California

Romig Engineers is the geotechnical engineer for this $11 million building.  The Defenders Lodge will provide lodging for veterans of all wars undergoing treatment and their families at the VA hospital in Palo Alto.  The two-story, steel frame building is about 17,000 square feet and is supported on a shallow foundation.

Mixed-Use Commercial Building

Palo Alto, California

Romig Engineers was the geotechnical engineer for this mixed-use building project in Palo Alto.  The steel-framed, three-story, 11,000 square foot building includes office space on the lower two floors and residential on the upper level.  After considering drilled pier and shallow foundations to support high loads at the braced frames, a mat foundation was selected as the cost-effective alternative.

Vendome Place Apartments
San Jose, California

Romig Engineers was the geotechnical engineer for this 10-story high-rise, located just south of the Civic Center in downtown San Jose.  The building was constructed by Barry Swenson Builder, and includes commercial at the ground level, apartments on levels two through eight, penthouses on levels nine and ten, and mechanical and storage at the basement level.  The tower is supported on a mat foundation as an economical alternative to a pile foundation.

Terrabay Residential Development
South San Francisco, California

Romig Engineers prepared geotechnical and slope stability evaluation for the repair of an ancient landslide within the Terrabay residential development.  The repair included removing the upper 20 feet of slide material across the landslide, constructing two 60 foot deep drainage keyways, and a stabilization shear key at the base of the slide.  The repair allowed construction of about 60 homes located near the base of slide.

Network Appliance Corporate Campus
Sunnyvale, California

Romig Engineers was the geotechnical engineer for several office buildings and parking structures constructed on NetApp's Corporate Campus in Sunnyvale.  Our work included preparing geotechnical recommendations and observing earthwork and foundation construction for six 4-story office buildings and three 3- to 4- level parking structures.  These structures were able to be supported on shallow foundations instead of more costly deep foundations.
